The Trinity Jazz Young Artist Competition
December 12th 2013 by Horace Alexander Young

In recent years, The Trinity Jazz Festival has featured performances by number of the prominent Middle and High School Jazz Ensembles in the Greater Houston Area. This year, in an effort to expose and discover a broader base of young people who are studying and performing jazz, the Festival is hosting a solo competition. Four (4) performers will be chosen, two of which will represent each category of Middle School and High School.

The competition is open to all instrumentalists and vocal musicians between 12-19 years of age. Two performers will appear, with a house rhythm section, each night of the festival as the opening act of that evening.

Guidelines and Rules of Competition

Each student must fill out a complete application form. Be sure that your phone and email information is correct and current. Applications for the competition can be downloaded from the Trinity Jazz Festival website at

Each entry must include the required musical examples to be submitted in the form of a compact disc only. Do not write your name or any other identifiable markings on the disc.

All applications must be submitted by mail and should be accompanied by a ten dollar ($10) non-refundable processing fee.

Eight (8) Semi-Finalists will be chosen and contacted by 1/7/14. Those chosen will perform in a live play-off to determine the final four performers. The date of that play-off will be announced when the semi-finalists are notified.

This competition is open to any student registered in a public or private institution or those that are being home schooled (proper documentation must be submitted). Family members of individuals who are on the Trinity Jazz Festival Committee or Administrative officials of the church are not eligible to participate.

All entries must be received by 12/31/13.
