About Batanga

908 Congress Ave. Houston, Tx 77002

We transformed an 1880s saloon into a modern tapas restaurant with a vibrant, fun atmosphere reminiscent of Latin America.

We kept the original exposed brick walls–replete with a railroad tie that someone magically stashed in the middle of a wall–but the space has changed quite a bit from when it housed the Big Casino Saloon and a liquor store the 1880′s. With 5,400 interior square feet, we can accommodate everything from a night out with friends, to business lunches and dinners to help close the deal, to intimate romantic dinners, to large parties and happy hour events.

Take a peek inside Batanga, and check out the plat map for the space in the 1880′s (then No. 68 Congress St.) and the advertisement for Charles Dumler & Emil Clede’s Big Casino Saloon. We even found one of the casino tokens.

Featuring Latin American tapas dishes (small plates) that originate from places such as Peru, Brazil, Spain, Colombia, Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, and Portugal, we’re open 7 days per week for lunch and dinner, with a Happy Hour that runs 3pm – 7pm M-F.

We feature exotic, handcrafted cocktails and extensive wine list.

On Sundays, bottles of wine are 50% off and brunch is served 11am – 3pm, followed by our popular 3-course Sunday Supper after 4pm, which consists of a farm salad + whole roasted suckling pig + local vegetable + Chef’s dessert.

On Wednesday – Saturday, live Latin music is piped from our inside stage onto our 3,600 sq. ft. outdoor patio, the largest in downtown Houston. Musical styles include Samba, Bossa Nova, Pagoda, Forro, Boleros, Salsa, Merengue, and Cha Cha, among others.

Our late night menu (think bacon-wrapped hot dog and fried tres leches) kicks in at 11pm, while our state of the art audio system pumps out tunes for the crowd runs until 2am on the weekends.

Houston Chronicle, by Lindsay Peyton, 10.1.13:  Brian Fasthoff opened Batanga with his brother Hank in April. The restaurant and bar offers tapas, live music and Sunday brunches, as well as specialty cocktails from Latin America and a wine list with an emphasis on regional wines from Latin America, Spain and Portugal. Fasthoff had opened four restaurants in Atlanta and wanted to try out the bustling Houston market. "When we first opened, I thought we were on the front wave of everyone coming back downtown," he said. "I felt there was much more potential growth downtown."
